romance, novel
这两个词都可作“长篇小说”解。novel指以情节形式反映现实生活中存在的风俗、人物等的文学作品; romance指以浪漫手法描述昔时异地的、在现实生活中不太可能存在的离奇人物、风俗或冒险的故事。

novel指任何有情节、人物、对白的虚构长篇散文体故事。
romance系novel早期的代用词，泛指具有强烈神话和传奇色彩的故事，现指爱情故事。
