改写自古英语blindfellen。blind，瞎。fell，砍伐，击倒。原指打瞎，后改成fold，折叠，指眼罩。blindfold和fold没有丝毫关系，在中世纪英语中原作blindfellen/blindfelden，由blind（瞎的）加fellen‘to fell’（击倒）构成，字面义为to strike someone blind（打瞎子）。那么它后来是如何演变为blindfold的呢？英国有一古老的捉迷藏游戏，叫blindman's buff/bluff。一人蒙住双眼摸索着去捉在他周围来回躲闪的人，捉住后辨认所捉的人是谁。这一游戏汉语有时译作“摸瞎子”，蒙跟的布通常是一块折叠起来的（folded）手帕。因此人们常将btindfellen的过去分词形式blindfeld/blindfelled和fold（折叠）一词相联系，久而久之就渐渐演化为blindfold这一形式，既可用作形容词，表示“被蒙住眼睛的”，也可用作动词，表示“蒙住…的服睛”。
