一提起郁金香（tulip），人们往往最先想到的就是荷兰。没错，郁金香是荷兰种植最广泛的花卉，也是荷兰的国花。很少有人知道，其实郁金香的故乡在中亚，包括西域即现在的新疆，16世纪后才传入欧洲。中国唐朝大诗人李白留下的“兰陵美酒郁金香，玉碗盛来琥珀光”即为明证。由于郁金香花似穆斯林头巾，所以波斯语称之为dulband，土耳其语称为tulbend，意即“穆斯林头巾”。该词通过拉丁文和法语进入英文，演变成tulip这一形式。土耳其语tulbend一词通过另一渠道进入英文，拼写为turban，仍指“穆斯林头巾”。
