temper指从感情方面体现出来，决定处理问题或应付形势的方式的性格或性情，这种性情可以是暂时的也可以长久的。
character指对个性或人格所作出的客观评价，常常与道德有关。
nature指其天性。
personality主要指个性。
disposition书面用词，指人的主要爱好或思想、精神方面的重要习性、气质。也可指短暂的情绪。

古代欧洲的“体液学说”认为人体包括四种体液（humors）。四种体液的组合比例决定了人的脾性、气质和健康。英语单词complexion来自拉丁语complexionem（组合），本意是人体四种体液的组合，与英语单词complex（复合体，复合的）同源，表示由体液组合所决定的人的脾性。古代人又认为人的脾性能通过肤色显露出来，就像中国人所谓的“相由心生”，因此complexion一词又衍生出“肤色、面色”的含义。
