item, piece
这两个词的区别在于:piece可与抽象名词连用,也可与具体名词连用,而item则不可与具体名词连用。例如:
他撕下了一小张纸。
［误］ He tore off a small item of paper.
［正］ He tore off a small piece of paper.

来自拉丁语item，相似的，更多的，词源同idem,identity.后引申词义条目，清单等。来源于拉丁语中“同样地”“也”的语义，相关的拉丁语词汇有ita,itaque,itidem,idem。当item被用来介绍一张清单上除了第一项的其它部分时，就产生了英语中现在的语义。
