his即是做形容词用，后面接名词；同时his还可以做类似名词作用，也就是老师们常说的特别难懂的一个概念：名词性物主代词，你可以简单的理解为名词性物主代词=形容词性his（他的）+名词。
举个例子：别人问：Whose is this book?，你说It is his book.这个回答的his是形容词性的代词，因为后面加了名词book，形容词+名词是经典搭配。
但是你也可以说：It is his.这里的his就不再是形容词，因为形容词后要接名词的（单独作表语除外），所以肯定是名词性物主性代词，也就是相当于形容词性的his加名词book。
如果你还不能理解，我估计最大的原因可能是his既是名词性物主代词也是形容词性代词。
